CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI / TOSCANA

50 kilometres south of Livorno 100 m uphill on the first ridge lies the medieval village Castagneto Carducci. Named after the poet Giosuè Carducci, who once lived here, the village has still kept its typical rustic character.

Inside the historical centre with town walls and gates, with the castle of the Earl Gherardesca and the baroque church, small alleys and steep stairways are curling.

The narrow mainstreet, lined with tall houses is filled with life: along pharmacy, barber, butchery, „alimentari“, bank, bars and restaurants it takes its way downhill towards the small market place.

Donoratico, a new district with railway station offers a wider range of shopping facilities. The Coast near Marino di Castagneto with its milelong expanded sandy beach behind sand dunes and stone pine woods is 2 km off.
21 kilometers from here you‘ll find the recommendable beach of the Golfo di Barratti, with a tuscan gravesite and uphill the fortification of Populonia.

In Venturina, 18 kilometers south of Castagneto Carducci there is the all-season opened ancient roman bath ‘Calidario‘ with its 37 degree warm thermal water. Siena, Volterra, Lucca und Pisa invites you to daytrips. There are ferryboats from the seaports Livorno und Piombino to the islands Elba und Capraia.
